Project Overview
- Objectives
The contract for hosting and co-financing a new EuroHPC petascale supercomputer was signed between the European High-Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU) and the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). The EuroHPC JU subsequently held an international tender for the purchase, selecting Fujitsu Portugal as the supplier.
This HPC system, called "Deucalion", installed in Portugal, is apetascale supercomputer capable of performing 10 Petaflops or 10 million billion calculations per second. The machine will use several advanced technologies, including Fujitsu's ARM A64FX processor, which is also used in Fugaku, one of the world's fastest supercomputers. Deucalion has been installed at the University of Minho in Guimarães.
Deucalion will also enable the development of a unique and innovative context for applying European and global principles of green computing, taking advantage of a fully sustainable infrastructure, co-financed by national funds allocated to the area of Science and European structural funds allocated to the Northern region and the Innovation Support Fund and Energy Efficiency Fund (the latter under the tutelage of the Minister for the Environment and Climate Action).
This is an important new national and European resource, which will contribute to more and better research and innovation.
