Arquivo.pt's catalog of tools for digital preservation

The information that governs life today is born digital and disseminated online. However, priceless digital objects published online have been irretrievably lost.

Arquivo.pt is a public infrastructure that preserves digital objects published online, to safeguard this digital legacy for future generations.

In October 2023, after 15 years of research and development, Arquivo.pt launched a Catalog of 13 innovative tools to support the preservation of online content at risk, from its acquisition to its dissemination (e.g. search and access, APIs, training, open datasets or exhibitions).

Arquivo.pt's catalog of tools for digital preservation has been selected as a finalist for the Award for Safeguarding the Digital Legacy. You can consult the application documentation.

Searching for preserved web images

Images published online are precious digital artifacts that document contemporary times for future generations. Arquivo.pt has developed an innovative image search system that allows the discovery and access to billions of images preserved on the web since the 1990s. This image search service, unique in the world, is available to any Internet user. The resulting scientific publications are available in open access and the software developed is published in free open source projects to be reused and improved by the community. See the application documentation.

A service from Portugal to the world

Arquivo.pt is a preservation service accessible on the Internet. More and more researchers from other countries are using this digital resource for scientific studies. This international visibility is due to the fact that Arquivo.pt preserves content in several languages - for example, about the 2019 European Elections - and because it is innovative in the services it provides for searching and accessing preserved information.

A researcher, from anywhere in the world, can search for texts, images or train Artificial Intelligence models based on the historical information preserved by Arquivo.pt.
