The Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) has submitted to UNESCO the first national report on the "Implementation of UNESCO's 2021 Recommendation on Open Science", marking an important step in the dissemination of Open Science in Portugal.

The UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science, adopted in 2021, highlights the fundamental role of Open Science as a tool to improve the quality and accessibility of scientific results and processes. This document establishes guidelines and objectives to transform scientific practices, encouraging greater collaboration, transparency and knowledge sharing.

In order to produce this report, the FCT relied on the collaboration of the scientific community, promoting a public consultation that allowed relevant contributions to be collected and integrated, enriching the content and scope of this document, which is now available for consultation on the FCT website.

The report addresses several priority areas identified by UNESCO, including promoting a common understanding of the benefits and challenges of Open Science. It also stresses the creation of an enabling political environment that fosters more inclusive and accessible scientific practices, as well as investment in infrastructure and services dedicated to Open Science. Training human resources, strengthening digital literacy and empowering researchers and professionals are also considered fundamental pillars to ensure the success of these practices.

In addition, the document stresses the importance of international and multisectoral cooperation to reduce digital, technological and knowledge inequalities, promoting global inclusion in access to science.

With this initiative, Portugal reaffirms its position in the global movement for Open Science, aligning itself with the principles established by UNESCO and strengthening its commitment to the advancement of knowledge and scientific innovation, both nationally and internationally.
