The Barcelona Supercomputing Centre (BSC) has announced the entry into the production phase of its latest supercomputer, MareNostrum 5 (MN5), in which Portugal has a 5% stake, financed by the EU's RRP in Portugal. This new milestone in European supercomputing comes after the completion of the physical and logical assembly of the platform's two largest partitions.

The Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) invites the national sectors of Science, Technology, Innovation and Public Administration to submit expressions of interest to access the production phase of MN5. Interested parties must complete and submit the simplified form, available at expression of interest form, by September 9, 2024.

Details of the Selection Process

Applications will be evaluated every two weeks by FCT, particularly by the advanced computing services of FCCN, FCT's digital services, with the support of the technical team. Selection will be based on three main criteria: (1) order of arrival of applications, (2) previous experience of applicants and (3) immediate availability to use the resources.

Access conditions

  • Resources available per order:
    • Minimum 1,000 k and maximum 5,000 k CPU core.hours
    • Maximum 100 kGPU core.hours
    • Maximum 100 TB of storage
  • Expected access period: 4 months from August 2024 to December 31, 2024.
  • Selection preferences: Candidates with experience in HPC, previous approved projects or computational work on other HPC machines will be given priority.

The Deucalion and BSC technical support team will evaluate and validate the requirements. Each candidate can only have one access request approved and the process closes when the resources available through the Advanced Computing Project Calls, to run on MN5, are exhausted.

MareNostrum 5 features

MN5 is one of the first three pre-exascale supercomputers co-funded by the European EuroHPC initiative, with a maximum performance of 314 petaFLOPs. The platform includes several partitions, such as the GPP partition with Intel Sapphire Rapids CPU nodes and HBM nodes with NVMe storage, and the ACC partition with nodes with Nvidia Hopper GPUs and NVMe storage. It has storage capacity on SSD/Flash and hard disks, with high read and write performance, as well as tapes for long-term storage. More information can be found on the MareNostrum 5 website and in the MareNostrum 5 | BSC Support Knowledge Center.
