The European Joint Undertaking for High Performance Computing signed contracts for the installation of future European supercomputers. One of them (Deucalion) will strengthen Portuguese capacity in this area.

Deucalion will be installed by the end of 2020 and will have the capacity to perform 10 billion operations per second. The installation of this supercomputer is part of an application led by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), as part of the EuroHPC - European High Performance Computing initiative, which will result in an increase in Portugal's computing capacity.

EuroHPC seeks the convergence of European resources to install high-end supercomputers for big data processing in several European countries. The aim is to position Europe as a leader in supercomputing, so that European researchers and scientists can access world-class resources.

This is one of the examples of initiatives aligned with Axis 5 - Research of INCoDe.2030, which is also part of the context of the preparation of the National Strategy for Advanced Computing, the Advanced Computing Portugal 2030.

"Deucalion represents a significant increase in the computing power available in Portugal and will allow easier access to the entire community of the national scientific and technological system for work in the field of intensive computing, data science and artificial intelligence," says the member of the Board of Directors of FCT, Nuno Feixa Rodrigues, in a press release.

The National Digital Skills Initiative (Portugal INCoDe.2030) involves several Portuguese ministries, bringing together the areas of Science, Technology and Higher Education, Education, Labour, Planning, Infrastructure, Economy and Administrative Modernisation , with the aim of promoting digital skills.
