After three days of work at the University of the Azores, between 5 and 8 May, get to know some of the numbers that marked the tenth edition of the Jornadas de Computação Científica (Days of Scientific Computing).

The tenth edition of the Days of Scientific Computing registered an increase of almost 20% in the number of sessions held, compared to the previous edition. After having hosted 27 sessions over the three days in 2018, in 2019 the number was 32. In the same vein, the number of speakers rose from 36 to 41.

The growth was also noticeable in the number of registrations, with a 5% increase in the number of registrations compared to 2018, for a total of 523 registrations. This increase is in line with the trend of recent years. Compared to the 2016 edition, for example, the Jornadas de Computação Científica registered more than double the number of enrolments.

This year's edition of the annual meeting of the scientific and academic community served by the National Scientific Computing Unit also maintained the number of sponsorships in the same order, with the support of 35 companies and institutions. In this scope, highlight goes to the social dinner (offered by Cisco and Warpcom), the Wave Party (powered by Wavecom) and a Happy Hour (Springer Nature).

In the structure of the programme, one of the main novelties was the grouping of the sessions according to the pillars of the National Scientific Computing Unit. A workshop for newcomers, the creation of a Zapping with the highlights of the unit's services and a walk held on day 0 were other changes.

The tenth edition was also marked by another edition of the "Manda Lá o Bityte" competition, which this year challenged participants to identify the problems of their institution and how the national Scientific Computing Unit could help solve them. Jorge Machado, from the Polytechnic Institute of Portalegre, was the winner and received a Kindle, courtesy of Amazon Web Services (AWS).

During the three days of work, these days also had the collaboration of students from the University of the Azores. Classes from the courses of Public Relations and Communication and Computer Science, Networking and Multimedia supported the realization of the event, in the areas of reception and media coverage.

During the closing session, the team also thanked the team from the University of the Azores and everyone who made this meeting possible. Although it was a new challenge to organize the event in the Azores, it was clearly overcome, thanks to the teams involved, as well as the involvement of the community.
